Crackers Comedian of the Month

The Hitman of Hilarity

Angelo Tsarouchas is not only a heavyweight on stage, he’s becoming a recognizable face on the big screen. You’ve probably already seen him on a few TV commercials  he’s the quiet mobster eating a pizza in an ad for Delissio, and he’s the Guinea Pig’s voice in Block Buster’s animated ads.

“It’s pretty cool. I’ve already worked with some of the best actors in the world!” quips Tsarouchas. In that list is Robert DeNiro, Denzel Washington, Sylvester Stallone, the late great Anthony Quinn, Anne Heche, James Woods, and Nastassje Kinski to name a few. Angelo has even given Marlon Brando directions to a good Greek salad.

“I think I get some roles just because I look like someone most people know!”

Angelo’s hit list so far...

Two’s a Mob, House of Luk, The Kiss of Debt, My Name is Tonimo, Avenging Angelo with Sylvester Stallone ( an apropos title) and he recently finished shooting a film with Robert DeNiro called John Q. Michael Tsarouchas, the younger brother has been in five films with Angelo The Intruder, Matthew Blackheart: Monster Smasher, Tony! Tony! Tony!, The Art of War with Wesley Snipes and One Way Out with James Belushi. Angelo Tsarouchas has had repeating roles on the Sopranos, Nero Wolf and Twice in a Lifetime.

Tsarouchas is an easy going and friendly guy. “I like food, women and people in general” he’ll tell you. “I may never play a romantic lead, but women still like me!” he smiles a devilish grin, and you know it’s true.

Sitting in the green room at Barrie’s Yuk Yuks with professional as well as a couple amateur comedians hoping to get 5 minutes on stage, Tsarouchas jides everyone in their turn. The game is on. The Maple Leafs are losing and one of them just lost a $20 bet. Tsarouchas owns the room almost in the same way he owns the stage.

“No one is really sure what ethnicity Angelo really is,” says Bob of Yuk Yuks. “Most people think he’s in the mob! If you’re Italian, you’ll think he’s Italian too! That’s probably why he gets away with the stuff he does.”

Tsarouchas is a good joke writer, has instant wit and great adlibs. A powerhouse on stage, he keeps the laughs coming so hard the audience cries Niagara Falls.

“I was born in Ottawa and grew up in Montreal. I flipped burgers at my Dad’s restaurant, the Steer Burger and made fun of the customers. I always made fun of the neighbours too.” He grew up in an ethnically diverse neighbourhood of Italians, Greeks, Portuguese, Lebanese and of course, French people.

“As a kid I desperately needed attention in school. My teacher let me get in front of class and do a routine. I started doing stand-up in high school on a dare. Most comedians seem to get started that way!”

Tsaroucha’s act is filled with half truths and self deprecating jokes that most of us seem to relate to.

The Heavy Weights’ remarks...

Isn’t playing hide and seek redundant in Saskatchewan? You can watch your dog run away for four days!

Most fat people tend to say that they’re big boned. I’m here to tell you my mother is not a Tyrannosaurus Rex!

We call them Bloc Quebecois because the whole province hasn’t had a bowl movement for six months!
